This video was originally going to be a totally live action surrealist film.
We filmed on Marloes beach in Pembrokeshire. A night shoot on the shortest night of the year!
The dummies in UV paint pushing their flaming shopping trolleys, a couple of people dressed in UV suits. Dorothy on the rocks out at sea calling the helicopter down to save her, Alex coming out of the sea, waves crashing against rocks, it looked fantastic.
But you had to be there.
I did an initial live action edit which we sent over to Viva in Germany, they loved this rough cut and did a sneak preview. I didn't think it was good enough, we hadn't shot enough material and the second unit cameraman had shot everything at 25fps rather than 50 to give the surreal look I was after.
Lyndon at RED got hold of the rushes and we made an entirely 3d video (with some live action in monitors) on the flame in one sleepless weekend.
At the time and even now probably the fastest turnaround ever for a fully animated promo.
I still remember the madness of this shoot. We needed 3 walkie talkie relays to base owing to the granite rock face and the distance involved, tide was late coming in, up to my waist in water all night, losing my favourite jacket, generator packing up, building a bridge, a guy on holiday who had offered to help transport equipment down to beach knackering his land rover. Then we got back to the hotel and they'd locked the doors and wouldn't let us in so most of the crew just drove back to London.
The hotel was a bit bizarre, the bar area was completely covered with pictures of Michael Bolton in his mullet prime.
Moral of this story, never do a night shoot on shortest night of the year and stay away from hotels with excessive use of Michael Bolton pictures.
Shots magazine liked it though and featured it in their Creative Showcase.

The idea for this video came when I was flying back from Germany. I looked down at the cotton wool clouds they looked so dense as though you could land on them and you bounce back up. A few weeks later I went over for a meeting with the record company in Hamburg to listen to this track as they wouldn't mail it to me as Alex Christiansen (U96) had had a previous song 'ripped off' before he released his version. This situation was strange as this track bore strong simularities to Cyndi Laupers 'Time after Time'. In fact MTV used to play the videos back to back.
The video features Richard Cobin, a gold medalist in 'hotdog' ski jumping
